Changi to the city: Grab vs taxi vs MRT

Short answer: Once you're through the terminal, compare Grab's upfront fare against a metered taxi plus the LTA Changi location surcharge, which is S$8 between 5pm and 11:59pm and S$6 at every other hour. Both options run overnight. Take the MRT only if your bags are light and nobody is waiting on you. And you don't need a wad of SGD cash, as long as you've got a card loaded in Grab or you're in a taxi that takes plastic.

The jet-lagged forum threads will tell you it's always Grab, or always the taxi queue. Neither is right, because which one wins moves around by the hour and by how long the queue is. What actually works is about 30 seconds of fare arithmetic at the kerb.

What's actually on the taxi meter

Street-hailing from Changi is still the classic path. Follow the Taxi signs after baggage claim and join the official queue rather than going with whoever approaches you in the lobby. Stick to the standard liveries too, unless you genuinely mean to pay a premium flag-down for one of the unmarked "premium black" cars.

If you have no SGD cash, ask "Card OK?" before your bags go in the boot. It's a ten-second question, and a much worse problem to discover in your driveway at 1am.

What you'll pay is flag-down plus distance and waiting time, then the Changi location surcharge on top, and possibly a peak (25%) or late-night (50%) hiring charge as well. Those percentages stack on the metered fare, not on the flat location surcharge, which is worth holding in your head when you're eyeballing an app quote against it.

Grab and the other apps

Download Grab before you fly, and add Gojek or TADA if you want a second quote to compare against. Put your foreign card in while you're on home Wi-Fi, because the OTP fight is far better had on your own sofa than in the arrivals hall on a dying phone.

Then, on the day:

1. Clear immigration and collect your bags first. Booking while you're still airside just means a driver circling.
2. Open the app on airport Wi-Fi or your new prepaid +65 SIM.
3. Pick the exact pickup pin the app gives you for your terminal or Jewel door. They're specific, and guessing turns into a phone call in bad signal.
4. Read the upfront total before you confirm. Surge and any temporary operator fees are already baked into that number.
5. Walk to the pin. Ignore anyone at the kerb offering to "take Grab cash", because that isn't Grab.

When the MRT is the grown-up choice

One roller bag and daylight? Public transport is genuinely fine, and Changi connects into the network. Budget for one extra transfer, or a short Grab for the last kilometre, if you're heading to a walk-up condo.

Cash, declarations, and the rest of landing day

Keep your bridging cash under the CBNI threshold where you can. If you're carrying more than S$20,000 in physical or bearer value, the declaration has to be filed within 72 hours before you arrive, which is the bit people miss because they assume it's something you do at the airport.
