Dental care for foreigners in Singapore

Private vs public dental for EP holders, MOH fee benchmarks, kids braces cash reality, Medisave myths, insurance carve-outs, and when JB makes sense for big tickets.

FamilyLiving3 min read

Dental is the quiet budget leak in expat Reddit threads: corporate inpatient plans often carve out teeth, EP holders have no Medisave, and CHAS-style subsidies are citizen/PR tools — not a foreigner discount code. Walk-in private clinics are straightforward; sticker shock happens on wisdom teeth, crowns, and implants.

How to walk into a clinic

Bring:

  • Passport or FIN card
  • Phone number + local address
  • Payment method
  • Insurance card / panel list if you have dental outpatient cover

Private clinics will register you as a new patient and quote before major work. Public institutions are usable at unsubsidised / private-patient rates — do not expect citizen pricing because you pay cash.

Fee realism (MOH benchmarks)

MOH publishes CHAS dental fee benchmarks for common private primary-care procedures (figures exclude GST; verify live). Useful anchors for negotiation, even if you are not CHAS-eligible:

Procedure (benchmark band)Approx. private primary-care range
ConsultationS$21–31
ScalingS$35–60
Filling (simple → complex)S$65–180
Extraction (anterior → posterior)S$70–164
Root canal (anterior → molar)S$400–1,400
Permanent crownS$750–1,400

Public hospitals publish average private-patient fees for specialist work. Examples from MOH’s 2024 averages (excl. GST; excl. consult/x-ray): impacted wisdom tooth surgery under local anaesthesia often clusters roughly S$800–1,300 depending on institution; implant-with-crown averages commonly S$4.5k–6.6k per unit.

Myths that waste money

MythReality
“EP Medisave will cover my extraction”EP holders generally do not contribute CPF / Medisave — see CPF and foreigners
“Polyclinic dental is subsidised for me”Subsidies track citizenship/PR schemes; foreigners usually pay full rates
“Corporate health insurance includes dental”Many group plans exclude or cap dental/optical — read the schedule
“Implants must be done in Singapore”Elective big-ticket work is a common JB comparison shop — budget time, follow-ups, and complication risk

Practical year-one plan

  1. Check employer outpatient / dental riders in week one — not after the toothache.
  2. Book a scale and polish early; humidity + coffee culture is not kind to delayed hygiene.
  3. Get a written quote before crowns / RCT / wisdom surgery; ask how it compares to MOH benchmarks.
  4. For implants or multi-unit work, compare Singapore public private-patient averages vs a reputable JB clinic and the cost of redo travel.
  5. Keep invoices for insurance claims and for any future PR / school admin packs that ask for medical history.

Kids: braces and orthodontics

Teen orthodontics is a frequent relocation shock: international-school cohorts normalise braces, employer plans often carve out orthodontics entirely, and there is no foreigner CHAS orthodontic discount. Budget:

ItemPlanning note
Consult + records (x-rays / scans)Cash unless outpatient dental rider explicitly covers diagnostics
Aligners / braces courseMulti-year SGD five-figure territory is common in private clinics — get a written staged quote
Retainers / repairsAsk who pays if you leave Singapore mid-course
Mid-posting transferConfirm whether another country’s orthodontist will take over the same system

Deep dive on braces / Invisalign Teen cash, NDCS vs private, and mid-posting transfer traps: kids braces & orthodontics. Pair kids’ dental with paediatrician pathways for infection / facial swelling triage, and do not assume school “dentist day” leaflets are a financing plan. Teen independence season (provisional licence, late enrichment) often collides with retainer / repair appointments — keep one shared household calendar with teen driving independence.

Pair adult care with GP / hospital triage for facial swelling or trauma that belongs in urgent care, and expat health insurance when you are shopping riders.

Concert / recital costume weeks are a poor time to discover an untreated toothache — keep hygiene slots off show blackouts (concert / recital ops).
