Secondary shortlists on r/askSingapore (HCIS thoughts, SJII vs HCI vs ACI, SJII vs Dulwich, are international schools worth it) have shifted from asking which campus is nicest to asking about the exit. This guide is about the layer underneath: the counselling and application operations you're paying for whether or not you use them. What good counselling looks like when you go and check

Ask admissions for the counselling handbook before you pay the enrolment deposit, not after. It's the same discipline as checking SEN capacity in school waitlists: once the deposit is gone, you've lost the only leverage you had for a straight answer.

Alumni commentary about HCIS tends to describe a lot of second-tier UK placements and fewer US admits where SAT scores were weak. SJII, ACS(I), Dulwich and UWC each skew differently again, by nationality and by where families expect to go home to. All of which is worth hearing and none of which is current: verify with the counselling office as it is staffed today rather than a Reddit thread from 2022. If you're a mobile family
Check that the school's exit credential, IB DP or A-Level, is one the next country recognises — that's the question to settle before anything else, because it's the only one you can't fix later. Book the counselling introduction at the start of DP1 or Year 12, not the week UCAS opens. Map SAT and IELTS sittings against your own travel calendar early, because those dates won't move for you.
Keep a portable record of your child's activities as you go. A mid-contract move wipes out CCA continuity, and nobody reconstructs three years of it from memory in the autumn of Year 13. And if you find yourself entertaining the idea of a local JC after IGCSE, re-read IB and A-Level pathways and MOE's post-secondary admissions pages before you resign an international school seat you may not get back.
University counselling is a service product bundled into the fee. Tour it the way you'd tour the swimming pool.

- Does finishing IB in Singapore guarantee Oxbridge or Ivy admission?
- No. IB is a recognised pathway, but outcomes depend on predicted grades, subject choices, testing (SAT/ACT where required), essays, and counsellor/student execution. Ask for recent destination lists by country, not brochure logos.
- Can an IGCSE graduate walk into a local JC for A-Levels?
