Apps that matter for living in Singapore

Singpass first, then transit, payments, Grab, food, and haze — a week-one stack without notification debt.

Short answer: Install for jobs, not vibes. Singpass first, then ScamShield, one bank app, and transit. Prefer PayNow → FIN. Trust haze.gov.sg / myENV, not random AQI widgets. Everything else can wait until week two.

Install for jobs, not vibes. The only app that repeatedly blocks bank, telco, and government onboarding is Singpass — everything else is optional until week two.

Singpass notes foreigners hit

  • SMS 2FA wants a Singapore number — set up the app properly before you travel with only a foreign SIM
  • Face verification saves you when SMS fails overseas
  • Keep recovery codes / device hygiene serious; lockouts are painful mid-renewal
  • Treat unexpected Singpass “verify device” prompts and bank WhatsApp threads as scams until proven otherwise via official apps

PayNow: the FIN chicken-and-egg

Reddit’s “how do foreigners use PayNow?” threads share one answer: you need a Singapore bank (or eligible MPI) account. Tourists without local banking cannot magically peer-to-peer to someone’s personal mobile proxy.

Once you have an account:

  1. Update your FIN (and Singapore mobile) in the bank’s records
  2. Register PayNow proxies — mobile and/or NRIC/FIN where your bank supports FIN
  3. Verify the recipient name before every transfer

Some banks support FIN registration (e.g. DBS/POSB documents the FIN path); others may push you to a mobile-number proxy only. ABS summarises the network on the PayNow page. Until PayNow works, carry a card + some cash for hawkers and small vendors — see opening a bank account. Sent to the wrong proxy? Call the bank — do not peer-refund strangers — wrong PayNow recovery.

Delete ruthlessly

Food delivery, hawker discovery, and lifestyle apps are curiosity tools. If an app’s notifications cost more attention than they save, remove it after week two. Notification debt is a real cost of living.

Haze season: keep NEA haze guidance bookmarked — see haze preparedness.

Questions, answered

What is the first app I should set up after landing?
Singpass. Banks, telcos, and most government services keep blocking onboarding without it. Install transit and payments only after you have a working +65 number and FIN path for Singpass.
Should I register PayNow to my FIN or my new mobile number?
Prefer FIN when the bank offers both. Recycled prepaid +65 numbers can still receive someone else’s payments. Keep ScamShield installed before you treat PayNow as routine.
Do I need Grab, Foodpanda, and every bank app in week one?
No. Week-one stack is Singpass, ScamShield, one bank app after account opening, and a transit option (SimplyGo / MyTransport). Delivery and lifestyle apps can wait until housing is stable.
Which haze / air-quality app should I trust?
Use NEA / haze.gov.sg / myENV for official PSI and 1-hour PM2.5. Foreign AQI widgets use different sensors and scales — see the haze preparedness guide.
Is ScamShield optional for EP holders?
Treat it as week-one hygiene. New FIN and Singpass users are high-value phishing targets. ScamShield filters and the 1799 helpline complement — they do not replace bank freezes or police reports after a loss.
