DP LOC vs own pass: choose the work-rights product

Companion to Dependant’s Pass / trailing partner — post-2021 LOC is not a general work pass, business-owner LOC renewal traps, and when to push for EP/S Pass instead of LOC folklore.

Parent map: Dependant’s Pass · Trailing partner career. ONE Pass households (different product): ONE Pass spouse LOC depth. This companion is the LOC vs own-pass chooser — where couples treat DP Letter of Consent as a general Singapore work visa.

LOC is narrow; own pass is the labour-market door

From 1 May 2021, ordinary employer jobs for DP holders generally need a separate EP / S Pass / Work Permit. Letter of Consent is mainly for eligible DP business owners, not “any job with a consent letter.”

Chooser checklist

  1. Is the trailing partner taking an employer job? Push for sponsored EP / S Pass — not LOC folklore.
  2. Is the plan a Singapore business as owner/director with published shareholding? Stress-test LOC eligibility and renewal local-hire rules before quitting abroad.
  3. Is work overseas-only remote with no Singapore entity/clients? Read side income / freelance instead of forcing LOC.
  4. Sequence principal renewal IPA before betting on continuous DP/LOC work.
  5. Budget the household as single-income until the second product is issued.

Decision rule

If the trailing partner needs ordinary Singapore employment, choose own EP/S Pass — treat DP business LOC as a narrow owner path with renewal traps, not a general work pass.
