Dependant’s Pass: bringing spouse and children on a work pass

DP eligibility, post-2021 work rules, LOC renewal local-hire traps, EP-cancel cascade onto STVP, schooling implications, and sequencing with the main pass.

Short answer: A Dependant’s Pass lets eligible spouses and unmarried children under 21 live on a qualifying main pass — it is not a work pass. Ordinary jobs need a separate EP/S Pass/WP; LOC is mainly for eligible business owners. If the main EP dies, DPs usually die with it — plan STVP for the household.

A Dependant’s Pass (DP) lets eligible spouses and unmarried children under 21 live in Singapore on the back of a qualifying main pass — commonly an Employment Pass or S Pass (subject to MOM’s family-pass salary rules).

Typical eligibility pattern

The main pass holder usually needs to meet MOM’s salary and pass-type criteria for dependants. Exact thresholds change; verify against MOM before you sign school contracts overseas.

Work for DP holders (read this carefully)

A DP is not automatically a work pass.

From 1 May 2021, DP holders who want to work for an employer generally need their own EP, S Pass, or Work Permit. The old pattern of “get an LOC and take any job” no longer applies for ordinary employment.

A Letter of Consent remains relevant mainly for DP holders who are eligible business owners (ACRA-registered sole proprietor, partner, or director with ≥30% shareholding / equivalent). First-time LOCs are time-boxed (often up to one year or DP expiry, whichever is shorter). Renewals require employing at least one Singaporean/PR who earns the prevailing Local Qualifying Salary and has received CPF contributions for three consecutive months before you submit — that is the Reddit failure mode when a solo consultancy cannot justify a local hire.

If LOC renewal fails and the spouse still needs Singapore clients, the realistic forks are: pause local invoicing, hire to the published standard, or migrate onto an employer-sponsored / self-sponsored EP via a properly capitalised Pte Ltd (incorporating as a foreigner) — not “keep trading on an expired LOC.” Overseas-only remote work rules: side income / freelance.

Deep dive and job-search realism: trailing partner careers.

When the main EP is cancelled

DP status is tied to the principal. When the main EP is cancelled or expires, dependants generally lose the DP and need a lawful stay bridge — typically the employer-requested STVP path on cancel (up to 90 days if HR asks; default asks are often shorter). STVP is not work authorisation and is usually treated as single-entry in forum experience — leaving Singapore can end the bridge.

Ask HR in writing, before cancel day, to request the longest STVP for the whole household. Full between-jobs playbook (IR21, graduate LTVP adjacency): between jobs on EP. Principal cancel rules: MOM — Cancel an Employment Pass.

Schools and housing

International school waitlists and condo viewings often run in parallel with IPA timing. Use provisional holds carefully; understand cancellation penalties if the main pass is delayed. See school waitlist realism.

Documents to prepare early

  • Marriage and birth certificates (official translations if required)
  • Passports with adequate validity
  • Main pass IPA / issued pass details

Sequencing

  1. Main pass clarity (salary fixed for MOM)
  2. DP applications
  3. Housing deposit (flexible first lease if schools are waitlisted)
  4. School enrolment fees

Babies born in Singapore

A newborn does not automatically inherit the parent’s pass. Register the birth via LifeSG, secure a passport, and have the employer lodge a DP within MOM’s published windows while the ICA Special Pass covers the baby’s stay. Full clock: newborn pass & birth registration.

Do not assume the trailing partner’s income in month one. Build the household budget as if it is a single-income posting until a second pass exists.

LOC vs own EP/S Pass chooser (post-2021 work rights): DP LOC vs own pass.

Questions, answered

Does a Dependant’s Pass let my spouse work in Singapore?
Not automatically. From 1 May 2021, DP holders who want ordinary employment generally need their own EP, S Pass, or Work Permit. A Letter of Consent mainly covers eligible DP business owners (ACRA sole prop / partner / director meeting shareholding rules) — not any job.
Can my spouse renew a DP Letter of Consent without hiring a local employee?
Usually no for renewals. MOM’s published renewal path expects employing at least one Singaporean/PR at Local Qualifying Salary with three consecutive months of CPF contributions before submission. Solo consultancies that skip the local-hire bar are the common Reddit failure mode.
What happens to my family’s DP when my Employment Pass is cancelled?
DP status is tied to the principal. When the main EP is cancelled or expires, dependants generally lose the DP and need a lawful stay bridge — typically employer-requested STVP (up to 90 days if HR asks). STVP is not work authorisation. Ask HR in writing for the whole household before cancel day.
Does a baby born in Singapore automatically get a Dependant’s Pass?
No. Register the birth via LifeSG, secure a passport, and have the employer lodge a DP within MOM’s published windows while an ICA Special Pass covers the baby’s stay. See the newborn pass guide for clocks.
Should we pay international-school deposits before the main EP and DPs are issued?
Use provisional holds carefully. Waitlists often run in parallel with IPA timing, but understand cancellation penalties if the main pass is delayed. Sequence main-pass clarity → DP applications → housing → irreversible school fees when you can.
How often must a Dependant’s Pass Letter of Consent be renewed?
LOC validity is tied to MOM’s approval letter and the underlying DP — renew before expiry, not after the business has already operated without cover. Renewals commonly fail when the local-hire / CPF contribution evidence is missing. Treat LOC like a work authorisation clock, not a set-and-forget ACRA side effect.
Can a DP holder keep working on LOC while the principal EP is under renewal?
Only while the DP itself remains valid. If the principal EP lapses or is cancelled before renewal IPA issues, DP (and LOC) usually fall with it. Sequence principal renewal IPA before gambling on continuous LOC work; ask HR for written household status if renewal slips.
