Between jobs on EP: STVP windows, family knock-ons, and what you can still do

What happens when your Employment Pass is cancelled — STVP up to 90 days, DP/LTVP family cascade, spouse LOC myths, IR21, and graduate LTVP options.

Short answer: After EP cancel, ask HR for an STVP up to 90 days (many default shorter). It is stay only — not work. Family passes tied to your EP usually fall the same week; treat outbound travel as high-risk. Do not call it a Work Permit Special PassSTVP vs Special Pass myths.

Reddit’s recurring panic question: “I got laid off / I resigned — do I only have 30 days?” The official mechanic is clearer than the folklore. When an EP is cancelled (or expires while you remain in Singapore), your employer can request a Short-Term Visit Pass (STVP) so you have valid stay — MOM’s cancel page states this can run up to 90 days from the application date. Default HR behaviour is often shorter unless someone asks. Married to an SC or PR? STVP is only the short buffer — see EP job loss → spouse LTVP bridge. Retrenchment money (contract vs TAMEM norms, TADM) is a separate guide: retrenchment on EP.

This is not the same workflow as extending a tourist / social visit pass while you wait for a first IPA or Student’s Pass appointment — that is ICA’s short-term visit pass extension rail.

What STVP is (and is not)

TopicReality
Who requests itEmployer / agent via EP cancellation (or promptly after expiry)
Stay lengthUp to 90 days per MOM cancel guidance — confirm what HR actually selected
WorkIllegal. Cancellation ends work rights immediately
Re-entryLeaving Singapore on STVP can end your ability to return without a fresh visa — treat travel as high-risk
FamilyRelated DPs / LTVPs issued under your EP are typically cancelled with the main pass — plan their status the same week

Family cascade — DP / LTVP when the main EP dies

Reddit’s “my spouse still has LOC, so we are fine” threads skip the dependency graph. A Dependant’s Pass (and many family LTVPs tied to your work pass) generally falls when the sponsoring EP is cancelled. Work rights that rode on that family pass (LOC / employer arrangements) do not float in mid-air.

Same-week checklist for households:

  1. Confirm with HR / MOM what happens to each dependant’s pass on your cancel date — do not assume silent 90-day grace for the whole family.
  2. If a spouse was working via LOC on DP, treat that work right as ending with the DP unless MOM confirms otherwise in writing.
  3. School / childcare: tell admin the pass change immediately; fee and enrolment rules often assume a live long-term pass.
  4. Lease / MDW / Singpass e-services: inventory who is the “main pass holder” on every contract.
  5. If the household’s plan is exit, run the leaving playbook for everyone — not just the EP holder.
  6. If the plan is hunt, the clean path is still new EP IPA (then fresh DP applications) before cancel when possible — career pivots.

Spouse / unmarried-child ICA LTVP of an SC/PR with PLOC is a different category from EP-tied DP — see LTVP overview and do not confuse it with graduate LTVP.

Ideal path: never enter the gap

If you are changing jobs, MOM’s published sequence is still: new employer applies → IPA → then resign / cancel timing. Deep dive: career pivots. A clean IPA-before-resign beats any STVP optimisation.

If the gap is unavoidable

  1. Ask HR in writing to request the longest STVP available when they cancel (peers often report needing to ask for 90 days; silence gets you the short default).
  2. Start IR21 tax clearance early — employers must engage IRAS roughly one month before cessation; final pay may be withheld. See tax clearance.
  3. Inventory lease, schools, helper, bank, and dependants the same day the notice lands — use the family cascade list above.
  4. Interview aggressively while the old EP is still live if you still have notice — STVP is for packing and interviewing, not for freelancing. Travel + medical gap bridge: STVP travel/medical cover.
  5. If you hold a PEP or ONE Pass, different unemployment clocks apply (PEP: cancel if unemployed >6 months). Compare PEP and ONE Pass.

Graduate LTVP (narrow rescue)

Foreign graduates of eligible Singapore IHLs sometimes explore an ICA LTVP while seeking employment — published fees start at S$45 submission / S$60 issuance, processing often within 6 weeks. It is a stay bridge, not work rights, and not the spouse LTVP+LOC path. Reddit’s “apply while still on EP with a termination letter” anecdotes exist; ICA decides timing case-by-case. Full depth: graduate LTVP job hunt.

Exit vs hunt

If the job market is dead and cash runway is short, switch to the leaving Singapore playbook early — deposits, shipping, and IR21 do not care that you “might get an offer next week.”

Same-city EP hop IR21 edges: EP job-change IR21 withhold. PEP runway ending: PEP exit timing.

Questions, answered

How long can I stay after my Employment Pass is cancelled?
Your employer can request a Short-Term Visit Pass of up to 90 days from the application date. Many HR teams default shorter unless you ask. Confirm the end date in writing.
Can I keep working or freelancing on an STVP after EP cancellation?
No. Cancellation ends work rights immediately. An STVP is stay only — not work authorisation.
What happens to my family’s Dependant Passes when my EP is cancelled?
DPs and LTVPs tied to your EP are usually cancelled with the main pass. Plan their status the same week — do not assume they float independently.
Is it safe to leave Singapore and come back on STVP?
Treat outbound travel as high-risk. Leaving on STVP can end your ability to return without a fresh visa or new IPA.
Is the between-jobs STVP the same as extending a tourist visit pass?
No. Between-jobs STVP is requested through EP cancellation with MOM. Tourist / social visit-pass extensions are a separate ICA process.
