Extending a Short-Term Visit Pass while waiting in Singapore

Short answer: Extend your ICA Short-Term Visit Pass online once you are down to 14 days or less, allow about 5 working days for processing, and if it doesn't come through, leave before the pass expires. You can't work on a visit pass, and a JB day trip is not an extension plan. MOM's post-cancellation STVP is a different thing entirely.

Two different "STVP" stories get tangled together on Reddit, and mixing them up is how people end up in the wrong e-service or, worse, past their date. This page is about the ICA Short-Term Visit Pass, the social visit stay you hold as a visitor, when your EP, S Pass, or Student's Pass paperwork isn't ready yet. The other story is MOM's short-term visit facility for people whose work pass has just been cancelled, and that one lives in between jobs on EP.

Overstaying is not a waiting strategy

Overstaying is an immigration offence. The forum version of this, waiting quietly for IPA approval past day 30, is how people collect bans rather than how they save on flights. If your visit pass ends before the formalities are done, you have two options and only two: extend through ICA's published short-stay extension process, or leave Singapore lawfully and come back once your pass or visa position is clean.

How the extension actually works

It all runs through ICA's online e-Service. Walk-ins aren't accepted, so there's no version of this where you turn up at the building and sort it out in person.

Apply when your STVP has 14 days or less remaining. Processing usually takes around 5 working days, weekends and public holidays excluded, and some take longer than that, which is the whole reason the date matters more than it sounds. On a typical 30-day stamp, that means diarising the window before week three rather than noticing it when the pass is nearly up.

Have the passport particulars page ready, plus the D/E number from your SG Arrival Card. Some cases also need a local sponsor, a Singapore citizen or PR aged at least 21 with Singpass, so check whether yours does before you start filling anything in. In the purpose field, state the real reason you're still here — an upcoming Student's Pass appointment, EP issuance you're waiting on — and don't invent employment you don't have.

Approval is discretionary and the length granted varies. There is no automatic extra 14 days, whatever the folklore says. If ICA refuses, the lawful answer is a departure plan, not a second run at it through a land checkpoint the same afternoon.

Why visa runs backfire

r/askSingapore warns about this one regularly. Hopping over to Johor for 48 hours to "refresh" a visit pass is a pattern ICA's systems already know well, and it reads worse when the person doing it is stretching their stay while looking for work. Even if you get back in, you can be questioned, given a shorter visit than the last one, or refused. Read it alongside short-term vs long-term rental: unlawful housing plus visit-pass games is a terrible combination.

Waiting on a work or student pass

Four situations come up, and they don't have the same answer. If your EP IPA is approved but the card hasn't been issued yet, coordinate with your employer on issuance and entry requirements, and extend the visit only if ICA still needs you in the country for it. If the EP is still pending, you can extend or you can wait overseas, but you cannot start work on a visit pass while you decide. One line that shouldn't need saying and does anyway: working while on a visit pass is illegal work, including when HR has told you it's fine.

Housing while you wait

Being on a visit pass doesn't make a 30-day Airbnb in a private condo lawful. Use hotels, serviced apartments, or another lawful short stay (first housing), and only sign a long lease you could genuinely honour if the pass falls through.

A checklist worth keeping

1. Save your current visit pass expiry, as a screenshot, on the day you land.
2. Diary two dates: the 14-day extension window, and the roughly 5 working days of processing you need to leave room for.
3. Keep the IPA or school appointment PDFs and the D/E number from your SG Arrival Card somewhere you can actually find them.
4. Line up a local sponsor (SC or PR, at least 21, with Singpass) if your case needs one.
5. Tell HR or the school your immigration date in writing, so they stop assuming you can just stay.
6. If you're refused, buy the exit ticket. You can argue from a position of compliance; you can't argue from overstay.
