STVP stay vs travel and medical cover gaps
Companion to between-jobs STVP — stay-only pass is not work, outbound travel can kill re-entry, group medical usually ends with employment, and how to bridge medical cover for a short STVP window.
Parent STVP rail: between jobs on EP. Plan audit: expat health insurance. This companion is the travel + medical gap layer people discover mid-STVP.
Three products that are not the same
| Product | What it does |
|---|---|
| STVP after EP cancel | Lawful stay — up to 90 days if HR asks; no work |
| Group medical | Usually ends on last employment day — not when the STVP stamp ends |
| Travel / visitor medical | Optional cash product — may cover accidents while visiting/staying; read exclusions for “job seeker” / pre-existing / outpatient |
Leaving Singapore on STVP can end your ability to return without a fresh visa or new IPA — treat outbound trips as high-risk, not a JB reset.
Bridge checklist before cancel day
- HR: longest STVP request in writing
- HR/broker: exact group medical end date for you and dependants
- Personal / travel medical start date that overlaps the gap (waiting periods, LOG, deposit cash)
- Do not schedule elective care into an uninsured week
- IR21 freeze is a separate cash event — tax clearance
IPA-before-resign still beats STVP optimisation — career pivots.
Decision rule
STVP = stay. Travel insurance ≠ work rights. Group medical ≠ STVP length. Bridge medical cover before cancel, and do not fly on STVP hoping re-entry is automatic.
