EP cancel + SC/PR spouse: same-week bridge checklist

If your EP is cancelled and your spouse is a citizen or PR, act that week: ask for the longest STVP, file the spouse LTVP, tick PLOC if you need to work.

Layoff week on r/askSingapore usually burns five calendar days on folklore before anyone emails HR or opens an ICA e-Service. If you're still working out which route fits your household, the chooser sits on EP job loss and the spouse LTVP bridge. This page is the narrower job: what to do in the week itself, when your spouse is already a Singapore citizen or PR.

What to do the day you get the notice

  1. Email HR with the cancellation date and ask, in that same email, for the longest STVP MOM allows, which is up to 90 days. Ask explicitly. HR's default is often something a good deal shorter, and nobody is going to upgrade it for you afterwards.
  2. Confirm what happens to any DP or family passes hanging off your EP. They fall when the EP is cancelled. Don't assume a trailing spouse's DP floats free just because there's a local spouse in the picture.
  3. Pin down IR21 timing and the final-pay withhold now rather than in a month, because that money is the buffer everything else runs on. We cover the mechanics in tax clearance when leaving.
  4. Have the local spouse open the ICA spouse LTVP e-Service with their Singpass. That's the stay bridge that carries you past the end of the STVP.
  5. If the household genuinely needs two incomes, tick PLOC on the LTVP file at the same time. An LTVP on its own is permission to stay, not permission to work, and the two things are applied for together far more easily than sequentially. See PLOC and LOC for ICA LTVP holders.
  6. Write down who holds what. The lease, the school places, the helper's contract, and whose name is on each one. An STVP is a stay bridge, not a housing plan.
  7. If the answer is to leave rather than to bridge, switch to the leaving playbook in the same week. Not the week after.

The five beliefs that eat the week

Waiting until day one of the STVP to file the LTVP. Open the ICA application as soon as the marriage and sponsor facts support it. Filing while you're still on the EP is handled case by case, and the idea that it's forbidden is peer practice hardening into rumour rather than a published ban.

Filing a PMLA to speed up the LTVP. PMLA is a pre-marriage assessment. It is not a post-layoff accelerator, and reaching for it here just adds a queue.

Treating graduate LTVP as the same thing as spouse LTVP. They are different rows on ICA's site with different eligibility, and starting on the wrong one costs you the days you were trying to save.

Assuming the STVP lets you keep working. Cancellation ends your work rights immediately, whatever your notice period said.

Expecting PR to start automatically once the EP dies. Spouse PR is a separate, discretionary application, and nothing about losing a job triggers it.

The money side of a retrenchment, meaning notice pay and what your contract actually owes you, lives on retrenchment on an EP. The general STVP choreography, for households without a local spouse, is on between jobs.

The rule, in one line

Do all of it in the same week: the HR ask for the longest STVP, IR21, the ICA spouse LTVP, PLOC if you need the second income, and the household inventory. Spread it over two weeks and the usual result is a short STVP already running with no LTVP filed behind it. The wider framing, including which route to pick in the first place, stays on the EP to spouse LTVP bridge.

Questions, answered

Can I keep working during the STVP after my EP is cancelled?
No. Cancellation ends your work rights immediately, whatever your notice period said. An STVP is a stay bridge, not permission to earn.
How long an STVP can I actually get, and do I have to ask for it?
Ask HR in the same email as the cancellation date for the longest STVP MOM allows, which is up to 90 days. Ask explicitly, because HR's default is often a good deal shorter and nobody is going to upgrade it for you afterwards.
My spouse is Singaporean. Do the family's Dependant's Passes carry on?
No. Any DP or family passes hanging off your EP fall when the EP is cancelled. Don't assume a trailing spouse's DP floats free just because there's a local spouse in the picture, and confirm with HR what happens to each one.
Do we have to wait for the STVP to start before filing the spouse LTVP?
No, and waiting until day one of the STVP is what eats the week. Have the local spouse open the ICA spouse LTVP e-Service with their Singpass as soon as the marriage and sponsor facts support it. Filing while you're still on the EP is handled case by case, and the idea that it's forbidden is peer practice hardening into rumour rather than a published ban.
Will filing a PMLA speed up the spouse LTVP?
No. PMLA is a pre-marriage assessment, not a post-layoff accelerator, and reaching for it here just adds a queue.
Does the spouse LTVP let me work if we need two incomes?
Not by itself. An LTVP is permission to stay, not permission to work, so tick PLOC on the LTVP file at the same time. The two are applied for together far more easily than sequentially.
