EP salary cut and DP / LTVP cascade

An EP pay cut is an immigration event. Your employer must tell MOM at least a month ahead, and if the new pay falls short, your family’s DP or LTVP can go.

The "my company cut my package, does my spouse's DP die?" threads on r/askSingapore all rest on the same assumption: that a payroll change is a private matter between you and your employer. MOM doesn't see it that way. The employer-side notify mechanics (salary, occupation, moves between related companies) are on EP salary & occupation changes. What we're covering here is what happens downstream of the money, in your household.

The cut is an immigration event

Here's the published shape of it. Check the live pages before you rely on any of it, because these rules move.

Your employer notifies MOM, not you. That's worth sitting with for a second: the thing protecting your family's right to stay here is somebody else's admin task, and you can't file it yourself if they forget. The notify has to go in at least 1 month before the date the lower salary takes effect.

The revised fixed monthly salary then has to still qualify for the EP on its own terms. That's what the Self-Assessment Tool is for. Put the new number in and see what comes back. If the pass no longer qualifies at that figure, the EP gets cancelled and the person applies for whatever pass they can actually hold at the new salary.

Then the part that gives this page its name. If the revised salary no longer clears MOM's criteria for DP or LTVP privileges, MOM revokes the DP or LTVP tied to that work pass. The existing ones, not just the next renewal. A handshake pay cut with no notify to MOM is how families find out mid-school-term that their dependant passes are gone.

Questions to send HR before you sign the cut

Send these in writing and keep the replies. If HR is handling it properly, the answers cost them ten minutes. If they can't answer, you've learned something useful before you signed rather than after.

  1. Will you file the MOM salary-reduction notify at least 1 month before the effective date?
  2. Will you run SAT on the revised fixed monthly salary and send me the screenshots?
  3. Do my spouse's and children's DP or LTVP privileges still clear at the new number?
  4. If they don't, what's the plan: restore the pay, cancel and reapply, or a family exit timeline?
  5. Is this a related-company transfer in disguise? That one needs a new EP rather than a salary notify, and we cover it on changing jobs.

Raise vs cut: don't mix up the folklore

The two directions aren't symmetrical, and forum advice tends to blur them into one rule.

ChangeImmediate MOM notify?
Salary cutYes, filed by the employer, at least 1 month before
Raise aloneUsually no; you declare it at EP renewal
Raise, then adding dependantsNotify before you apply for the dependant privileges
Occupation or title rewriteA separate employer occupation-update request, roughly 3 weeks

What actually counts as "fixed monthly salary" is its own rabbit hole, and it matters here because the wrong reading of your package can make a cut look survivable when it isn't. We've unpicked it on salary package decoding. Renewal-year COMPASS firm scores are a different theatre entirely, and they live on EP renewal strategy.

When you can call the cut safe

Three things, in writing: the MOM notify, the SAT result on the revised number, and a straight answer that the DP or LTVP privileges still clear. Two out of three isn't a yes. Until you have all three, don't treat the cut as settled for the household, however settled it feels for your job.

The employer notify mechanics stay on EP salary & occupation changes, and the pass basics are on Dependant's Pass.

Questions, answered

Can a pay cut actually kill my spouse's Dependant's Pass?
Yes. If the revised salary no longer clears MOM's criteria for DP or LTVP privileges, MOM revokes the DP or LTVP tied to that work pass, and that means the existing ones rather than just the next renewal. A handshake pay cut with no notify to MOM is how families find out mid-school-term that their dependant passes are gone.
Who tells MOM about the salary cut, me or my employer?
Your employer notifies MOM, not you. You can't file it yourself if they forget, which is worth sitting with: the thing protecting your family's right to stay here is somebody else's admin task.
How far ahead of the pay cut does MOM have to be told?
The notify has to go in at least 1 month before the date the lower salary takes effect. Ask HR in writing whether they'll file it on that timeline, and keep the reply.
How do I find out whether the lower salary still qualifies for the EP?
That's what the Self-Assessment Tool is for. Put the revised fixed monthly salary in and see what comes back. If the pass no longer qualifies at that figure, the EP gets cancelled and the person applies for whatever pass they can actually hold at the new salary.
Do I have to notify MOM about a pay rise as well?
Usually no, a raise on its own is declared at EP renewal. The exception is a raise followed by adding dependants, where you notify before you apply for the dependant privileges. Cuts and raises aren't symmetrical and forum advice tends to blur them into one rule.
When can I treat the cut as settled for my family?
When you have three things in writing: the MOM notify, the SAT result on the revised number, and a straight answer that the DP or LTVP privileges still clear. Two out of three isn't a yes, however settled the cut feels for your job.
