Day-one after Singapore PR: checklist
What to do in the first weeks after PR — tell HR for CPF, MediShield Life and CareShield, DPS auto-enrol, Singpass FIN→NRIC, banks, ISP decision, and REP discipline.
Short answer: AIP is not PR. Finish ICA formalities, tell HR for CPF, re-register Singpass on the new NRIC, update banks, and treat REP as the travel key — not the blue card alone.
r/askSingapore’s “I just got PR — what now?” threads are not lifestyle fluff. The first fortnight is an identity swap: FIN → NRIC, EP-world insurance → MediShield rails, and take-home pay that suddenly includes CPF. Miss the admin and you get bounced Singpass logins, unpaid premiums, and an HR payroll that still thinks you are on EP.
Before the blue card — AIP formalities
“Approved in principle” is not the finish line. Peers routinely burn weeks between IPA email, medical upload, ICA biometrics appointment, and SingPost IC collection. Treat the portal checklist as a project:
- Book the ICA appointment immediately — slots can sit 3–5+ weeks out.
- Complete the medical and any MediSave / MediShield enrolment steps ICA lists for your IPA.
- Bring the documents the appointment letter names (passport, existing pass card, etc.).
- After biometrics, download / print Entry Permit + REP, then book IC collection.
- On collection day, re-register Singpass on the new NRIC — it does not always auto-migrate from FIN.
- Answer REP occupation / income fields truthfully — unemployed or between jobs at take-up can mean a shorter first REP; lying is worse than a 1-year stamp. See REP.
- You are not a PR for travel until formalities complete — while waiting, exit/re-enter on your existing work pass rules, not “almost-PR” folklore.
FIN → NRIC is a new identifier for banks and KYC in practice even when forum pedants argue about “same number forever.” Update every institution that still holds a G/F FIN.
Week-one priority stack
| Order | Action | Why it bites |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Tell HR / payroll with Entry Permit / temporary IC | CPF cannot start until the employer knows your SPR conversion date |
| 2 | Complete Singpass re-registration on the new NRIC | Most e-services still keyed to the old FIN will fail |
| 3 | Update banks, insurers, brokers, telco | Cards and KYC freeze when FIN ≠ NRIC |
| 4 | Expect MediShield Life mail / e-notice | Auto-cover for SC/PR; premiums from MediSave |
| 5 | Read CareShield Life enrolment rules for your birth year / PR grant date | Foreigners who become PR from 1 Oct 2020 face mandatory rules that older cohorts may treat as optional |
| 6 | Watch for DPS (Great Eastern) enrolment after first CPF contribution | Term cover; premiums from OA — opt-out is deliberate, not default |
| 7 | Keep Re-Entry Permit valid before any overseas trip | PR is not a souvenir stamp — see REP guide |
CPF — remodel take-home before you celebrate
Employed PRs enter CPF. Default graduated rates apply in the first two SPR years; full citizen-equivalent rates from the third year (age/wage bands differ — use the live tables).
Directional framing for many private-sector SPRs under age 55 on graduated (G/G) rates (verify the 1 Jan 2026 PDF tables):
| SPR year | Typical story people quote | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Lower employee + employer % than full rates | Cashflow shock is milder; MediSave may still be thin for first MediShield premium |
| 2nd | Steps up | Recalculate mortgage / school fee capacity |
| 3rd+ | Full rates (e.g. 20% employee / 17% employer bands for many under-55 wage cases) | This is the “my take-home collapsed” Reddit moment |
You and your employer can jointly apply to contribute at higher rates earlier (full/full or full-employer / graduated-employee). Do it in writing via CPF Board processes — not a handshake.
MediShield Life ≠ your old corporate plan
- Automatic for all SC/PR, including pre-existing conditions.
- Benefits are sized for subsidised B2/C public-hospital care. Private / Class A bills still leave a large cash or MediSave gap.
- Premiums auto-deduct from MediSave; top up if the first months of graded CPF leave MA short.
Most new PRs then price an Integrated Shield Plan (ISP) on top of MediShield if they want private-hospital / higher-ward cover — compare on MOH’s official table, not an agent’s WhatsApp screenshot.
CareShield Life and DPS — the letters you will ignore at your peril
| Scheme | What it is | New-PR gotcha |
|---|---|---|
| CareShield Life | Long-term care / severe disability payouts | Foreigners granted SC/PR from 1 Oct 2020 generally have mandatory participation (disability rules differ by grant date) — do not assume the “optional for older cohorts” Reddit advice applies to you |
| DPS | Term life (death / TI / TPD), administered by Great Eastern | Auto-extended on first valid working CPF contribution for SC/PR aged 21–65; premiums from CPF OA; you may opt out deliberately |
Identity hygiene people skip
- Laminate / store the Entry Permit; print / attach REP discipline before travel.
- Update driving licence particulars at Traffic Police when prompted (FIN → NRIC is not always automatic).
- Report residential address changes within 28 days via ICA eCOA — including overseas postings; stickers go on the blue IC — eCOA playbook.
- Know the lost blue IC path and fees before the first JB weekend — lost NRIC; stop carrying the old FIN card “as backup.”
- First foreign-passport renewal after PR: run ICA Transfer REP — transfer REP to new passport.
- Mid-deed-poll? PRs update the foreign passport name first, then ICA particulars — change of name on NRIC.
- Newborn or under-21 child is not automatic PR — sponsor via ICA’s child path and read NS warnings for sons — PR for child / newborn.
- Diary NRIC re-registration only if ICA notifies you at 30 / 55 (10-year rule) — re-registration guide; fold into annual life admin.
- When citizenship IPA lands later, treat SCJ as its own project — SCJ after IPA.
- File a CPF nomination once contributions start — Public Trustee default is slow (wills & nomination).
- Soft perks: NLB membership and NHB museum free-admission rules shift for PR — nice, not the reason you applied (arts & culture).
- Housing: PR does not magically unlock every HDB path — read HDB for PR / mixed status.
- SkillsFuture: SkillsFuture Credit (the dollar wallet) is for Singapore Citizens — PRs do not get that credit. Many course-fee subsidies on MySkillsFuture still list PRs (and sometimes LTVP+) at lower bands than SC mid-career enhancements — check each course’s funding table before you assume “PR = free upskilling.”
Decision rule
Treat PR formalities week as a project, not a celebration dinner. If HR has not confirmed the SPR conversion date in payroll within one cycle, escalate — every delayed month is delayed MediSave depth and wrong contribution tables.
Next: PR application strategy (before you re-apply for family), Singapore citizenship application (when the 2-year PR floor and NS model are ready), and REP overseas (before your next long-haul).
Questions, answered
- Am I a PR as soon as ICA emails in-principle approval?
- No. AIP is not the finish line. Complete medical/biometrics, collect the IC, and finish Entry Permit / REP formalities. Until then, travel on your existing work-pass rules.
- What should I do in the first week after the blue NRIC?
- Tell HR/payroll immediately so CPF can start, re-register Singpass on the new NRIC (it does not always auto-migrate from FIN), then update banks, telco, and insurers that still hold a G/F FIN.
- Does take-home pay drop after PR?
- Often yes. Employer and employee CPF contributions start from the SPR conversion date. Model net pay before you celebrate the card.
- Do I still need private health insurance after PR?
- MediShield Life (and CareShield / DPS rails) kick in, but many households still keep or add an Integrated Shield Plan. Compare coverage rather than cancelling everything on day one.
- Can I leave Singapore immediately after getting PR?
- You need a valid Re-Entry Permit to return as a PR. Answer occupation/income fields truthfully at take-up — unemployed or between jobs can mean a shorter first REP.
